January 27-February 1 7th Grade Science

7th Science- As we finished up muscles on Friday with skits (each group of two had to make up a skit that used and mentioned and described all the muscles we had just learned in class-they were quite amusing!) we now move on to studying our largest organ-our skin! Look for a test coming up probably about Thursday this week!

January 27-February 1 6th Grade Science

6th Grade-As we will wrap up our lab on minerals on Monday (and hopefully everyone will take home their crystals Monday as well!), we get ready to move on to rocks and the rock cycle. The students will have a chance to polish rocks on their own using a rock tumbler and will be creating games to help them remember the rock cycle.

January 27-February 1 Chemistry

Chemistry-As we wrap up our unit on 'movie special effects', we get ready to move into an entirely new unit called 'cooking chem.' Again, the Active Chemistry book that we use is very creative in the way that it teaches concepts through labs instead of doing labs to reinforce concepts learned in lecture.

January 27- February 1 Biology

Biology-After finishing a week of Evolution and Creation, we will finish up Monday discussing the reasons why God has created this magnificent world in 7 real days-not 7 million years! We will dive into the evidence that abounds to support this idea. We will be finishing up creation by Wednesday and moving on to study bacteria and viruses starting on Thursday.

January 27-February 1 8th grade

8th grade- We have just begun our electricity and magnetism book. Friday was spent making short skits using at least four examples of static electricity as an 'effect'. We also are starting to study all the different ways many animals use electricity as an attractant for prey as well as a deterrant for predators!

Report Cards Home Wednesday

Just a reminder that all parents should expect to see report cards on Wednesday! Hopefully this is good news you get to bring home. If not, make a decision to make next quarter different! Set goals for yourself! Study an extra 15 minutes a night, make notecards for tests, something that will help improve your grade and most importantly study skills! Best of luck next quarter!

HIGH SCHOOL COUNSELOR TO VISIT

The counselor from Pinckney High School will be at school Tuesday OCTOBER 2 evening at 6:30 p.m. to talk with high school students about requirements for high school students.

October 1st

10-11th Bible: We continue to memorize 1 John 3. We have been doing 2 verses per week. These verses are put onto note cards and then memorized. The student must get five signatures on the back of each notcard. Different weeks will require different people's signatures. This week we are currently memorizing 1 John 3: 7-8. Remember, these are cumulative. On Thursdays, pop quizzes may be given to make sure students have their verses memorized.

6th Graders- Studying Symbiosis (played the symbiosis game today!), going over photosynthesis, nitrogen and carbon cycles Tuesday and Wednesday. Friday we will have a review of all of the above and will have a chapter test Monday October 8th.

7th Grades: We are finishing up our quizzes on streams (they made streams in class and had to identify all of their parts) We move onto lakes today, wetlands tomorrow and pollution on Wednesday and Thursday. Friday will be a review day for Chapter 2 test. (with parts on Chapter 1) The test will be on Monday October 8th.

8th Grade: We will be spending the week learning about pressure and volume relationships. We will also spend time on Archimede's principle. With that knowledge, we will be building ships of different shapes and sizes. This will all be followed by a take home test that is due on Friday October 5th.

Biology: We are working through successions, population dynamics, conservation and biodiversity. The students will have a take home test on Friday October 5th that is due Monday October 8th.

Chemistry: As we learn about the specific groups of elements individually, the students continue to work on their videos about the life of Mendeleev. The requirements are as follows:DUE OCTOBER 22

You are responsible for making a 'production' to get across the "LIFE OF MENDELEEV"

You must use information from the Mendeleev packet that was discussed in class.

All commercials must be related to Mendeleev, the elements, or periodic table.

Remember, if someone watched your production, they should be able to know the same amount of information as if they had read the packet on Mendeleev.

It should be fun, interesting, creative, BUT IT NEEDS TO CONTAIN THE INFORMATION FROM THE PACKET.

Simply mentioning Mendeleev and making up information about him will not pass.

The point is to get the packet's information across in a creative way.

Each person needs to have an equal part. The camera person needs to be in the movie as much as anyone else.

Don't make up history! Add whatever you want to this packet but it must be from a valid source. If you use other sources, they MUST BE TURNED in with your video.

Time Requirement: Each person in your group needs to be in the video for at least three minutes. Therefore, WITHOUT commercials, a group of three should have a 9 minute presentation and a group of four should be at least 12 minutes (remember that each person needs to do their own part).

Due Date of Video: OCTOBER 22 MONDAY

SCRIPTS turned in the day of your video! ( do not need for commercials)

September 19th 2007

10-11th Bible-These next couple of weeks we continue to ask the question "Why is truth truth? Who says it is truth? Where is our truth based?" Using Mark Eckel's insights, we are learning a great basis for what we believe. It is a great foundation to defend your faith!

8th Science- NATURE OF MATTER- We have just completed learning about the atomic structure and the history of the atom. We have also briefly looked at the periodic table of elements and its properties. We now move on to the different states of matter. Many fun experiments lie ahead!

Biology- After finishing up about two weeks of 'what is biology' and learning about the scientific method, we are now prepared to learn more about ecosystems. We are looking forward to learning about competition within an ecosystem as well as the biomagnification of toxins (mercury, lead, ddt, etc).

Chemistry-We started off the year reviewing the metric system, how to weigh different substances, how to measure liquids in different containers, and how to do dimensional analysis! We now are building our own stores using grocery ads and today will try to fill in products in the aisles. What does this teach? We will learn about how a grocery store is very similar in its set up to the periodic table of elements. Students will have to put items in their store (and hopefully have room for them)as well as try to find room for new products. This reminds us of how Mendeleev had to leave spaces in the table for elements he thought would one day be discovered. Smart idea!

6th Grade Science- ECOLOGY-We are wrapping up a lot of work we have done on trophic levels and food webs today. We have been concentrating on various ecosystems in Michigan (Jack Pine Forest, Woodlands Forest, Coastal Dunes, Wetlands, and Rivers) and using them to make our ecosystems. We start a basic competition study today as well as looking at predator prey relationships and their importance.

7th grade science-WATER PLANET-We have just finished up learning about how much water people use individually and as a family. We are currently concentrating on what a precious and unique resource that water is. Today and tomorrow the students will be performing water commercials to promote this precious commodity. Each student is responsible for having 4 demos in their commercial to demonstrate some of water's wonderful qualities. After we finish the wonders of water, we will move on to studying our watershed and its many parts.

WELCOME BACK!

Well the pool parties and days in the sun may be numbered as we approach the start to a brand new school year! I would like to personally welcome everyone back to LCS and send a special invite to those who will be new to us this year! I am very excited to hear about everyone's summer and to see what you have been up to lately! Some of you have had some interesting travels and others have had a good relaxing summer! Others have gone on to get jobs and have kept quite busy! Whatever the case, soon your mindset gets to change slightly and I will have the privilege of helping you to expand your horizons-especially in science! Enjoy these last few weeks of summer and prepare your minds to get in the learning mode! I am looking forward to seeing you and spending my days with each and every one of you! See you soon!
